Using data from resources such as the Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community Service, the FBIs 2016 Uniform Crime Report, the bureau of Labor Statistics, and ATTOM Data Solutions, 24/7 Wall Street examined all cities containing 65,000 residents or more for nine sets of criteria. The areas examined include a city’s crime, demography, economy, education, environment, health, housing, infrastructure, and leisure.
So what puts Beaverton over the top? According to 24/7 Wall Street’s study, Beaverton’s health and fitness, livability, and employment opportunities are the city’s best qualities. “Few cities are likely to offer more job opportunities than Beaverton,” 24/7 Wall Street writes, “over the last two years, employment in Beaverton has increased by 8.3%, faster than all but a few dozen other US cities. The national job growth rate over the same period was 3.5%.” Beaverton also boasts a lower poverty rate of 9.6%, notably lower than the Portland Metro Area’s rate of 12%, and the State’s 13% rate.
Another factor in this ranking is Beaverton’s low rate of preventable hospitalizations, one of the best in the nation, making it one of the healthiest populations in the US. Excuse me while I now google gyms in Beaverton…..
This is not the first recognition for the Beaverton, which also placed in Money Magazine’s list of best cities in 2016 (ranked 9th) and 2017 (ranked 12th).
Do you live or have lived in Beaverton? What amenities do you believe contribute to its high placing? If you disagree with Beaverton’s number one status, what city do you think should have placed first and why?
