Juneteenth - The History Behind a Reminder of American Freedom

Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that all enslaved people were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, which legally ended slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth has since become an important day of reflection and celebration for African Americans, who have used it as a time to honor their ancestors and re-affirm their commitment to freedom and justice. As Juneteenth has grown in popularity, more and more states have begun recognizing it as a holiday.
Today, Juneteenth became an official Federal holiday in June of 2021 as such some counties in the metro area are closed —specifically Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas. As such, any real estate transactions that would normally take place on this day will not be accepted or processed.
So, as we mark Juneteenth this year, let us take a moment to remember those who fought and sacrificed to make freedom a reality for all Americans—and thank them for paving the way for future generations. Happy Juneteenth!
