Twenty-three years ago the Pantone Color Institute created an educational program for the design community and color enthusiasts around the world. They wanted a way to create a conversation around color. Therefore they created the Pantone Color of the Year educational program. "We wanted to highlight to our audience how what is taking place in our global culture is expressed and reflected through the language of color." (Pantone)
So, who chooses the color of the year?
Pantone assembles a team of color specialists from across the globe. The panel then scours the world looking for new color influence. Their color influence can come from a host of different places:
- entertainment industry
- art collections/new artists
- any area of design
- fashion
- travel destinations
- gaming
- social media and so much more.
The team of color specialists takes a careful, considerate process to determine what the color of the year will be. They use color trend forecasting to help them throughout this year-long process. As they go through the process they drill down their color choices and once they determine a color they take the same care in naming that color. The name is important as it needs to provide a feeling as well as convey a story.
2023 COLOR OF THE YEAR VIVA MAGENTA!
When I first saw viva magenta I was a bit taken aback by how bright it was. As a Realtor® I wondered how on earth is this color going to work in home decor. As I started to curate a Pinterest board I fell in love with viva magenta and really began to see how well it will work in home decor, and fashion. I know that for some the thought of painting a whole room viva magenta can feel overwhelming. However "If you don’t want to commit to an accent wall or statement ceiling, subtly infuse this shade into your owner’s suite, bathroom or gameroom for a playful pop of color." (With Dress) I know that a statement will/accent wall can also feel overwhelming. If that's the case try adding decorative pillows, or accent pieces to help brighten up your space. You won't be fully committed, and you'll be able to easily change it if you decide it's not for you.
