Tabitha Moffit Brown was honored by the Oregon Legislature in 1987 as the “Mother of Oregon”. She traveled the Oregon trail in 1846 with her son and aging, ailing brother-in-law. Learning about the Oregon Trail in middle school I know that the journey was hard, so I’m very impressed that Mrs. Brown chose to travel the trail at the age of 66.
At the end of the trail she eventually settled in Forest Grove and while she was a teacher, she began sewing gloves to sell to support herself. However, her desire to help orphaned children led her to help start a school and home for them. A log church became the school and in 1848 it was established as the Tualatin Academy. A year later it would become what we know today as Pacific University.
Mrs. Brown was born in Brimfield, Massachusetts in 1780 and died in Salem, Oregon in 1858. You can visit her grave at Pioneer Cemetery in Salem.
