As I’ve researched the amazing women in Oregon’s history I have been so surprised by the number of firsts, and today I have the opportunity to introduce you to another first. Say hello to Mercedes Deiz who was the first African American woman to be admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1960.
Mrs. Deiz is an example of what many of us would say is a woman who has everything/can do it all. While attending night classes at Northwestern School of Law she cared for her husband and three children, as well as working as a legal assistant. In later years she credits her husband for taking on a large part of the child rearing while she was in school (by the way she was fourth in her class).
Governor Tom McCall appointed her to be the first Oregon female judge of color when he appointed her to her position as a district court judge in 1969. Mrs. Deiz had to run for that seat in May of 1961 and she won that election which made her the first African American woman elected to the bench in Oregon.
On the 40th Anniversary (2000) of her admission to the Oregon State Bar Association recognized Mrs. Deiz with the Award of Merit which is their highest honor.
Mrs. Deiz died in Portland in 2005.
